Regarding the Lugger story, don’t forget Webb Chiles. He made it from San Diego to the Canary Islands in one. His book is quite a read. It is interesting to note that he disputes Ant Stewards voyage as being invalid for an open boat because it was decked from the bow to the mast.

When daylight gets to the other side of the world Webb should be heading into Bundaberg, Australia. It looks like he had several days of excellent sailing and a couple of days of very light winds. I'll be looking forward to reading his passage log which will probably appear here in a few days.-----
Aug 13, 2014 · With the boat on a mooring, I went to work for two months; working on the new mast, prepping the boat, freelancing as a sailing writer and helping with odd jobs in exchange for welding on the mast. In late May, I moved the boat into the harbor and myself and a hearty crew stepped my new turbo Morgan 27 rig using the rig of a 35-foot race boat.

SHADOWS/Chiles-1 SHADOWS a novel by Webb Chiles SHADOWS/Chiles-2 I SHADOWS/Chiles-3 1 One morning two boats left a city in the East. It was an unusually logical city, governed under the theories of an American psychologist by a Chinese man educated in England.
Sailing a small open boat beats rowing for both speed and route control. The hardships are comparable, but Webb Chiles made his Pacific trip with fewer expedition supplies and fewer logistical hassles than ocean rowers seem to have.
Webb Chiles. Such words of wisdom casually encroach on Skipper’s thoughts as he surveys his pilotage notes and assesses the weather around him. From the comfort of his 14’ open boat ‘Arwen’, securely tied on to his favourite yellow mooring buoy at the southerly end of the Saltash Bridge trots; and now substantially fortified by hot tea and cheese and marmite sandwiches, it has not ...

Francis Brenton, Shane Acton, and Webb Chiles forswore the comfort of the modern world repeatedly so as not to be seduced from their quests for personal fulfillment. There was something about the ocean—the process of sailing and constantly challenging Fate—that made the twentieth-century conveniences that most men seek seem not worth it.
Re: Easiest Sails for Single Hander Since it is pretty much established that a boat with compact dimensions or a monohull meets the need here, the question on how to strike the mast is the next logical one –like it might be a good idea to avoid a rig that requires a crane to lift the mast when the boat has grown to full size.
The word Drascombe is a trademark that was first registered by John Watkinson who applied it to a series of sailing boats which he designed and built in the period 1965-79 and sold in the United Kingdom (UK). They comprised the Coaster, Cruiser Longboat, Dabber, Drifter, Driver, Gig, Launch, Longboat, Lugger, Peterboat, Scaffie, Scaith and Skiff, together with a few other one-offs. They have ...

From the cover of the original hardcover edition: This is the story of possibly the greatest open boat voyage of all time. The first part of what will be a trilogy if the author survives to complete the future legs of his voyage, it is the gripping narrative of a 7,000 mile voyage, alone, across the Pacific in an open, unballasted, eighteen foot yawl weighing only 850 pounds.
On its surface, "The Open Boat" is a dutifully objective retelling of the experience of four men on a lifeboat. It's the kind of disaster story that we are familiar with reading about in the newspaper—but within that structure, it deepens and widens.
